UK Proof of Address: What You Need to Know

You may be required to provide Proof of Address for official purposes. Below are the accepted documents and their requirements.

Proof of Identity

You must submit one of the following documents. All documents must:

  • Be current (issued within the last 3 months)

  • Be a certified copy (originals are not accepted)

Valid Identity Documents:

  • Full valid passport

  • UK photocard driving licence (full or provisional)

  • Full UK paper driving licence

  • National Identity Card (for EEA or Swiss nationals only)

  • Travel documents issued by the UK Home Office

  • HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) tax notification

  • Benefits letter (from DWP, Jobcentre Plus, Child Benefit Office, or Veterans Agency) – must be less than 4 months old

  • Current Northern Ireland voter’s card

Proof of Address

You must provide one of the following documents. All documents must:

  • Be recent (typically less than 3–4 months old, unless specified otherwise)

  • Be a certified copy (originals are not accepted)

Accepted Address Documents:

  • Council Tax bill (current year, including reminders or demand letters – less than 4 months old)

  • Utility bill (gas, electricity, or oil)

  • Water bill (current billing period, including reminders)

  • Landline telephone bill (less than 4 months old; mobile phone bills not accepted)

  • TV licence bill

  • Current full UK photocard driving licence (if not used for identity verification)

  • UK bank, building society, or credit union statement (must show name, address, and recent transactions)

  • UK credit card or commercial card statement

  • Mortgage statement (from a recognised lender; less than 12 months old for certain accounts)

  • HMRC tax notification

  • Benefits letter (from DWP, Jobcentre Plus, Child Benefit Office, or Veterans Agency) – less than 4 months old

Key Considerations:

  • Mobile phone bills are not accepted as proof of address.

  • Verify the date requirements for each document before submission.

  • Ensure your name and address match exactly across all documents.

For official purposes, always provide certified copies—original documents should not be submitted.
